Magnetic fluctuations in the van der Waals magnet NiI2
Abstract: NiI_{2} is a centrosymmetric magnetic semiconductor long known for its exotic helimagnetism. It belongs to the family of transition-metal-based van der Waals materials, recently the subject of intense research activity due to their intriguing low-dimensional magnetic properties. In the 2D limit, there is a recent proposal that NiI_{2} hosts a novel form of skyrmion phase based on a combination of anisotropy and frustration. As part of a project to investigate this system, we propose a muon measurement of its two magnetic transitions, aimed at extracting the low-energy dynamics expected in their vicinity, and also those occurring down to low temperatures.
