Investigation of caprolactam-d11 at high pressure
Abstract: High pressure has shown to be a powerful tool for the exploration of the organic solid state. In particular one is able to perform polymerisation reactions on solid materials by the sole application 1000s atmospheres of pressure. The fact that the material is solid means that the molecules to be polymerised are in a specific orientation with respect to one another which impacts on the structure of the polymer created. We have recently investigated a number of systems under pressure and have found that they change their crystalline structureand they also undergo polymerisation reactions. Caprolactam is an important monomer in polymer science and is the pre-cursor to Nylon-6. We have investigated this system using our laboratory instruments and have found that above 2 GPa it undergoes a change. We seek to characterise these changes further using powder diffraction.
