Unraveling Water-Polymer Interactions to Enable High-Performance Redox Flow Battery Membranes

Abstract: Alkaline flow batteries using low-cost materials are promising for long duration energy storage. The membranes are critical component that allow the transport of charge carrying ions while blocking the crossover of redox active species. However, fundamental research is required to advance the membrane materials, particularly development of membranes with high conductivity and selectivity. We have developed a new generation of cation exchange membranes with excellent ion conductivity and hence high energy efficiency in redox flow batteries. Here we intend to study the water dynamics to reveal the structure-property correlations. The results will be critical to direct future materials design and understand the water/ion transport mechanisms.
