CEF measurements on a new spin-chain compound NaErTe2O7
Abstract: Quasi-one-dimensional systems provide a fertile ground for exploring exotic phases due to strong quantum fluctuations and low dimensionality. Here, we present an Er-based spin chain system which exhibits an unusual spin ordering at 0.5 K. Although specific heat measurements exhibit a sharp peak at 0.5 K, the ac susceptibility data show an unusual frequency dependence. Notably, the entropy change exceeds the value of Rln2 expected for an effective spin 1/2 system. It is common for the Er ions in the oxides to display closely spaced low-lying CEF excitations. In order to unravel the origin of these intriguing properties, we propose to perform CEF measurements on this compound.
