Crystal Field Excitations and Effective Pseudospin in SrCoP2O7

Abstract: SrCoP2O7 is a magnetic material in which the Co2+ ions have an unusual local environment. However, the magnetic energy levels associated with these ions have not yet been measured. We propose powder inelastic neutron-scattering measurements on 8 g of SrCoP2O7 using MAPS. Measurements at 5 and 150 K with incident energies of 60 and 180 meV will resolve the lowest crystal-field and spin-orbit excitations, survey the higher-energy manifold, and distinguish magnetic modes from phonons through their momentum-transfer and temperature dependence. Comparison with related cobalt oxyanion compounds, particularly CaCoV2O7 , will reveal how the unusual square-pyramidal coordination modifies the Co2+ level scheme. The results will provide the microscopic basis for modelling the low-temperature magnetism of SrCoP2O7 and guide future investigations of its magnetic excitations.
