Low-Temperature measurement on dehydrated halloysite
Abstract: Halloysite is a clay mineral of composition, Al2Si2O5(OH)4 nH2O, and forms on rocky planets such as Earth and Mars. Due to its nanoscroll morphology, halloysite is widely used in various nanotechnologies (e.g. transportation of drugs via the pore of the nanoscroll). Its nanoscroll structure is comprised of alternating layers of water and clay. Through our previous total neutron scattering measurements on halloysite, we have observed scattering signatures of water and ice. However, to better distinguish such signatures from those of the clay structure, measurements on dehydrated halloysite are required. This proposal seeks to obtain a total scattering measurement on dehydrated halloysite at low-temperature and is therefore, required to complete our dataset.
