Low temperature structure of phenol

Abstract: In a recent powder study of phenol carried out on HRPD, it was determined that there is a significant inflection in the thermal expansion behaviour below ~ 80 K. Although there are no apparent signs of structural change in the powder diffraction data and no apparent emergence of any superlattice reflections, it is worth noting that the powder data covered a restricted range of d-spacings and were collected for the sole purpose of lattice parameter refinement. It is necessary to collect structural data from phenol at temperatures far above and far below this observed inflection, in the first instance, to determine what if any structural changes may be responsible. We desire to collect single crystal neutron diffraction data at 200 K and at a limiting low temperature (e.g., 10 K).
