Altermagnetic Splitting through the Morin transition in Hematite
Abstract: Hematite, is an interesting platform in which to examine the interplay between altermagnetism and relativistic magnetic anisotropy. At the Morin transition, TM=255K, the Neel vector undergoes an approximately 90deg reorientation: below TM, the system is a collinear antiferromagnet with moments along the trigonal c-axis, whereas above TM the moments lie predominantly in the basal plane and acquire a small Dzyaloshinskii Moriya-induced canting, producing weak ferromagnetism. The transition reflects a delicate competition between single-ion, dipolar, exchange, and relativistic anisotropies. This makes the Morin transition particularly interesting from an altermagnetic perspective. We propose rapid access to MAPS for measuring the altermangnetic spin splitting through the Morin transition. We can use a high-resolution configuration and focus the measurements around 100meV transfer at the K-point. Measurements will be made at three temperatures: below, at and above TM to measure any changes in the energy scale or width of the splitting through the transition.
