Investigation of chiral magnon splitting in a rare-earth-based g-wave altermagnet TbPt6Al3 using single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering

Abstract: Altermagnet (AM) is a new class of collinear antiferromagnet with time-reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking. Even in the absence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in AMs, broken TRS induces a spin-splitting in the electronic band and lifts the degeneracy of the magnon band. These phenomena have been observed only in transition-metal-based AMs, while those for rare-earth-based ones have been rarely investigated so far. In this work, we propose an unpolarized inelastic neutron scattering experiment on LET to observe the chiral magnon splitting in the first rare-earth-based g-wave altermagnet TbPt6Al3. Our study of TbPt6Al3 would provide an essential comparison for understanding the role of relativistic SOC in AMs and open up frontiers to explore altermagnetism in rare-earth-based compounds.
