Mapping charge and spin phase evolution in Ln0.5Ba0.5FeO3

Abstract: The title compositions are of interest as they contained mixed and unusually high valent Fe3.5+ and can be prepared as both A-site layer-ordered double perovskites LnBaFe2O6 and A-disordered Ln0.5Ba0.5FeO3 perovskite polymorphs. The A-site layer-ordered double perovskites LnBaFe2O6 were found to show complicated and successive charge and magnetic transitions using WISH data. Here we propose to study the recently synthesised new A-cation disordered perovskite polymorphs Ln0.5Ba0.5FeO3 (Ln = La, Pr, Nd). These show charge disproportion and magnetic ordering transitions near 200 K. To reveal the nature of the transitions and compare properties with the A-site ordered LnBaFe2O6 polymorphs, we propose temperature dependent neutron diffraction experiments at the WISH diffractometer to clarify the charge and spin orders. Samples are small (0.3 g from ozonolysis reactions) so the total counting time is ~13 hours per sample. The expected results will help us understand the effect of A-site order-disorder in tuning the charge, spin and lattice degrees of freedom in this notable transition-metal oxide system.
