Probing the phase transition and dynamics in nicotine analogue via quasi-elastic neutron scattering
Abstract: Nicotine is the primary psychoactive alkaloid in tobacco and e-vapes, with a molecular structure that enables it to interact strongly with biological systems and humans. The local dynamics of the nicotine molecule are expected to involve reorientation of the pyridine ring, internal rotation of the methyl substituent, and coupled motions. Therefore, we propose to investigate the molecular dynamics of nicotine by quasi-elastic neutron scattering across the temperature range from the liquid state through the glass transition accruing at around 194K. This will allow the identification of how chemically distinct parts of the nicotine molecule respond to phase transition.
