Applied Spectroscopy in the Physicochemical Analysis of Indigenous Xetá Pigments - Vesuvio
Abstract: This proposal aims to investigate the molecular composition, hydrogen content, and degradation pathways of historical pigments used by the Xet indigenous people, preserved in Brazil museum collections. Preliminary analyses using UV-Vis, Raman spectroscopy, EDS, and NMR indicate that both studied pigments one identified as genipap extract and the other cataloged as iron oxide are predominantly organic and exhibit signs of degradation. However, strong luminescence and compositional complexity limit the effectiveness of conventional spectroscopic techniques. To overcome these challenges, we propose the use of Deep Inelastic Neutron Scattering (DINS) on the VESUVIO instrument, which offers unique sensitivity to hydrogen and is not affected by luminescence. The experiment will quantify the hydrogen content across the different fractions (liquid, gelatinous, and solid) of the genipap sample, enabling the identification of structural heterogeneities and correlations between hydrogen content and degradation stages. The results are expected to provide unprecedented insight into the physicochemical nature and preservation state of these rare cultural heritage materials, contributing to both heritage science and the understanding of organic pigment degradation.
