Exploration of high-pressure, high-temperature phases and decomposition of Mn2(CO)10
Abstract: This project will utilize the capabilities of the PEARL instrument, including neutron transparent ZTA anvils and resilient tungsten carbide (WC) anvils, to collect high quality powder neutron diffraction of dimanganese decacarbonyl, Mn2(CO)10, under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. At room temperature, hydrostatic compression to approximately 6 GPa will probe crystal structure behaviour of Mn and CO across a disputed phase transition reported at 0.8 GPa and molecular distortion around 3.2 GPa. A second sample preparation will heat Mn2(CO)10 to 200 degrees Celsius at near ambient pressures and probe the crystal structure behavior of metal atoms and CO ligands across a posited high-temperature phase transition reported in the region of 64 - 68 degrees Celsius and through thermal decomposition reported in the region of 80 - 170 degrees Celsius. The pressure-driven structural response of Mn and CO complexes produced through thermal decomposition will then be explored for the first time using diffraction techniques via room temperature compression to approximately 10 GPa. Combined with ongoing thermal analysis and high pressure Raman spectroscopy experiments, this project will inform on the pressure- and temperature-driven behaviours of an important archetypal dinuclear metal carbonyl under extreme conditions.
