Exploring the spiral spin liquid state in LiYbO? through doping and neutron powder diffraction
Abstract: Frustrated magnetic materials exhibit strong spin fluctuations and highly degenerate ground states, giving rise to unconventional magnetic phenomena. A particularly interesting case is the diamond lattice, where magnetic frustration arises not from geometric constraints but from competing exchange interactions, namely, the nearest-neighbor (J1) and next-nearest-neighbor (J2) couplings. The J1-J2 Heisenberg model predicts the emergence of a spiral spin liquid (SSL) state when J1/J2 > 1/8. Although several spinel compounds have been investigated within this framework, conventional magnetic ordering often dominates due to factors such as large spin values, additional exchange pathways, or lattice distortions. In this context, LiYbO has recently emerged as a promising candidate, exhibiting multiple magnetic transitions and an SSL ground state. To elucidate the relationship between these transitions and the SSL behavior, we have undertaken a systematic study by substituting nonmagnetic In ions at the Yb sites. Structural analyses confirm that the LiYb1-xInxO2 series retains the parent crystal structure, while specific heat measurements reveal systematic changes in the multiple magnetic transitions with increasing nonmagnetic dilution. These results motivated neutron diffraction studies to trace the evolution of magnetic correlations.
