Temperature-Dependent Neutron Diffraction Study of SbSI for Ferro-Photovoltaic applications
Abstract: In this experiment, we propose a neutron diffraction experiment to investigate phase transition(s) in the multifunctional compound SbSI from 50 K to 500 K as a complementary structural probe with respect to x-ray diffraction. Around room temperature, SbSI is reported to crystallize in a ferroelectric (FE) state; above T_C=298K, it is unclear whether it transforms directly to paraelectric (PE) or via an intermediate antiferroelectric (AFE) phase, or rather if it retains FE state up to higher temperatures. The low-dimensional crystal structure is prone to subtle modifications, and SbSI polymorphism is unsystematically studied in the literature yet. To clarify the nature of phase transition(s) and thermal stability of crystallographic phases, we propose a temperature-dependent neutron diffraction study on SbSI powder synthesized by high-energy dry ball milling mechanochemistry. We propose to use the WISH diffractometer, optimal for its high resolution at long d-spacings and excellent signal-to-noise ratio, ideal for detecting expected small changes. The aim is to establish both nature and onset temperatures of such phase transformations, elucidating the stability and functionality range of SbSI for photo-ferroelectric applications.
