Continuation: Temperature dependent structure of molten borosilicates for sealing glass applications
Abstract: We propose to measure the structure of two barium borosilicate glasses and melts in order to complete work proposed under RB2310671. The original experiment was successful in measurement of one glass/melt composition up to 1200K, leading to a high-quality peer-reviewed publication (Alderman, Phys. Rev. Mater. 9, 2025, 105603). However, exposure of the molten sample to vacuum in the furnace setup used led to catastrophic leakage at higher temperatures, terminating the experiment. Hence a new setup has been developed and successfully deployed in Dec 2025 (RB2520092) for studying GeO2 glass/melt, in which the sample is held under 1 atm of gas, typically dry air. We propose to use this setup for the Ba borosilicates. Furthermore, the two compositions will be chosen as exact analogues of Ba borogermanates to be measured under RB2520089 under identical conditions, allowing for detailed comparison of the effect of tetravalent network formers, where Ge is active in terms of coordination change, and Si not (or much less so).
