µSR to study Fe-ZSM5 catalysts for the isomerisation of m-xylene
Abstract: Through a Johnson Matthey (JM) co-sponsored PhD studentship at the University of Glasgow, a series of industrial grade Fe-ZSM-5 catalysts have been extensively characterised (DR UV-Vis, XAFS, FTIR, Mossbauer, INS (TOSCA, MAPS), QENS, reaction testing, etc.). The isomerisation of meta to para-xylene has been used to probe the effects of Fe-doping on the speciation of the Fe in ZSM-5, a zeolite used as an additive in Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) for the production of gasoline. The addition of ZSM-5 has been found to potentially promote the production of light olefins, and propene in particular. By studying this isomerisation reaction, which involves the use of acid sites in the zeolite, the promotion effect or deactivation posed by the addition of Fe has been explored. Here we wish to apply for 1 day for a preliminary study of Fe-ZSM-5 to determine if SR can be used to probe Fe sites inside zeolites. We wish to explore whether we can observe analogous results, and therefore processes, similar to those we have recently measured on Cu-SSZ13. This preliminary study will help direct our recently awarded PhD studentship from the University of Glasgow.
