Spin reorientation and the low-temperature magnetic structure of Ho2CuMnMn4O12

Abstract: R2CuMnMn4O12 compounds with R = Y, Dy, and Er host a sequence of magnetic phase transitions characterised by spin-reorientation, large spin canting, and a low-temperature k=(0,0,1/2) modulation. However, the exact microscopic origin of this modulation and the complex magnetic ground state has not been resolved. Bulk physical property measurements indicate that Ho2CuMnMn4O12 hosts a similar sequence of transitions but with a split low-temperature response: a clear specific-heat anomaly at TAFM ~ 18 K and a separate magnetic susceptibility anomaly at TN3 ~12 K. Studying this split transition by neutron powder diffraction will enable us to decompose the magnetic ground state and decisively test how transition-metal spin canting and rare-earth anisotropy generate the unusual low-temperature physics of the R2CuMnMn4O12 series.
