Tuning Magnetic Phases and Topological Hall Effect in Ti-doped Kagome Magnet ScMn6Sn6?xTix
Abstract: The kagome magnet RMn6Sn6 hosts frustrated magnetism and topological Hall effect (THE), but the required high critical fields hinder applications. In nonmagnetic YMn6Sn6 , Ti substitution at Sn sites reduces the critical field for the transverse conical spiral (TCS) phase and enhances THE. Here we focus on ScMn6Sn6, which shows a similar THE but at higher fields. Our recent transport measurements reveal that Ti doping in ScMn6Sn6-xTix systematically lowers the TCS critical field from ~5 T (x=0) to <0.5 T (x=0.4), yet the microscopic mechanism remains unknown. To uncover how Ti modifies the magnetic Hamiltonian, we propose inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments on co-aligned single crystals (x=0,0.2,0.4) using the MERLIN spectrometer at ISIS. With incident energies of 130 meV and 50 meV (high resolution), we will map the full magnetic excitation spectrum across the Brillouin zone. Linear spin-wave theory (SpinW) will be used to extract Ti-dependent intra- and interlayer exchange interactions, magnetic anisotropy, and Dzyaloshinskii Moriya interactions. These parameters will provide the crucial microscopic link explaining the reduced critical field for topological transport. The requested 8 days of beamtime will enable a complete determination of the spin Hamiltonian, guiding the design of low-field topological kagome magnets for spintronics.
