Evaluation of structure and ionic conductivity of CaFH solid solutions

Abstract: Due to the growing role of ammonia in the carbon free fuel industry, the development of a more sustainable synthesis route is essential. Alkaline earth metal hydrides have potential use in both catalytic and electrochemical ammonia synthesis methods due the ionic conductivity and reversibility of these materials. Hattori et al. successfully synthesized ammonia from N2 and H2 gases at relatively low temperatures with the implementation of a CaFH solid solution co-catalyst. Due to the strong ability to conduct hydride ions, this material may be useful as an electrolyte in an electrochemical ammonia synthesis method. Conductivity will be evaluated through the collection of in situ electrochemical impedance data alongside neutron diffraction patterns at variable temperatures. Additionally, the formation of the CaFH phases will be observed through the collection of neutron diffraction patterns during the formation reaction process. Investigation of the structural and conductive properties of the CaFH solid solution will be incredibly useful in determining the functionality of the material and the future design of electrochemical synthesis cells.
