Structure of Antimony Germanate Glasses
Abstract: Binary glasses with high antimony content can be useful as nonlinear optical materials. Antimony germanates are of particular interest because of their complex network formation, which has been shown to contain mixtures of 3-, 4-, and 5-coordinated Sb-O polyhedra and potentially mixtures of Sb3+ and Sb5+ oxidation states. The Sb3+ units have been shown to contribute to network formation along with GeO4 tetrahedra. However, quantification of the coordination number distributions and intermediate range ordering have not been established. We seek to investigate the correlation between structure and glass forming ability in antimony germanates by using neutron total scattering at SANDALS. Compositions will include several in the Sb2O3-GeO2 binary. Atomic structure will be analyzed using the pair distribution functions (PDFs) and supplemented with structural modeling via empirical potential structure refinements (EPSR). A better understanding of how atomic structure influences properties and glass forming ability will enable optimization of these glasses' properties and processing.
