Continuation: The germanate anomaly in barium germanate optical glasses
Abstract: We propose herein to measure the structure of a series of barium germanate glasses, using neutron diffraction and pair distribution function determination, in order to verify, or otherwise, the putative structural similarity with previously measured calcium germanate glasses. Binary alkali and alkaline earth germanate glasses, in analogy to borate glasses, tend to exhibit extrema in their physical properties as a function of glass composition. This phenomenon has been referred to as the germanate (or borate) anomaly (with respect to silicates), and has been explained, at least in part, by changes in the Ge-O (or B-O) coordination number, nGeO, which goes through a maximum, including in the Ca germanate glasses. Since both Ba and Ca germanate glasses show similar mass density maxima, for example, it is hypothesized that the behaviour of nGeO with composition will be similar, but this remains untested.
