Investigation of spin excitations in the altermagnet candidate h-FeS

Abstract: Altermagnetism is a new class of magnetism that differs from conventional ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism. The alternating spin polarizations in both real and reciprocal spaces make altermagnets have some special spectroscopic features including chiral magnon splitting. Here, we propose to perform an inelastic neutron scattering experiment on a newly identified altermagnet candidate h-FeS, which features a unique temperature-dependent switching of magnetic anisotropy (Mori transition). By mapping out the spin-wave below the Mori transition temperature, we aim to directly observe the magnon-band splitting that is related to the altermagnetism.
