High-power sodium-ion batteries: in-operando powder diffraction studies of pouch cells at high charge and discharge rates
Abstract: We request 2 days beamtime on WISH to simultaneously measure the electrochemical performance and cathode crystal-structure behaviour of two identically produced sodium-ion battery (SIB) pouch cells, which we will prepare at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL). A particular focus of our research is the use of earth-abundant materials; in this proposal, the cathode chemistry is Na2/3(Fe1/3Mn2/3)O2. We require to run two pouch cells in order to assess reproducibility, a crucial requirement for scaling-up battery production. In preparation for this proposal of in operando studies Na2/3(Fe1/3Mn2/3)O2, we have optimised cathode synthesis and undertaken comprehensive characterisation, via ex-situ synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction and electrochemical measurements of full-cell 2032 coin-cell batteries.
