Adsorption from complex solutions at model polyester fabric surfaces

Abstract: We have previously used neutron reflection and SANS to study adsorption and aggregation of a new family of biorenewable soil release polymers. Our recent SANS experiments with contrast matching highlighted the interaction between surfactants (that are invariably present in laundry formulations) and the aggregation of SRPs. Separate industrial performance test experiments indicate a clear correlation between large scale aggregation of SRP and poor performance. In this experiment, we seek beamtime to explore the influence of surfactant on the adsorption of SRPs (and vice versa) at model polyester surfaces. The SRPs have all previously been studied by SANS, and we have further SAXS experiments scheduled to address their aggregation at very low concentration. Here we propose contrast-matched experiments using dSDS/SDS and D2O/H2O with NR to highlight the adsorption of SRP, surfactant and total adsorption as a function of SRP : surfactant ratio. In this way, we can use neutron reflection to complete our nanoscale characterisation under conditions that approach realistic laundry conditions. These experiments are necessary to validate the computational models of the Antenna prosperity partnership.
