Magnetic Excitations in the two stacking structures of La?Ni?O?: A Comparative Study of Stacking Polymorphs
Abstract: We propose a comparative inelastic neutron scattering study of both the bilayer-bilayer (2-2) and monolayer-trilayer (1-3) stacking structures of the nickelate superconductor La3Ni2O7 to investigate the role of magnetic excitations in the emergence of charge and superconducting order. Recent reports of superconductivity near 80 K under pressure, alongside evidence of charge and spin density wave order, have highlighted La3Ni2O7 as a key system for understanding unconventional pairing mechanisms. However, the magnetic excitation spectrum of the 2-2 and 1-3 polymorphs remains unresolved, with markedly conflicting reports of electronic ordering and superconductivity. Using high-quality polycrystalline samples of both stacking variants synthesised at Warwick, we will perform inelastic neutron scattering measurements on MERLIN at ambient pressure, focusing on low energy magnetic excitations and their temperature dependence. By mapping selected regions of energy-momentum space sensitive to spin correlations and collective modes, we aim to identify differences in the magnetic response between the two stacking structures. This study will provide critical insight into the interplay between magnetism, crystallographic stacking, and superconductivity in nickelate superconductors.
