Magnetic Phase Transition in a Highly Disordered Cuprate Near the Percolation Threshold
Abstract: We propose to complete our investigation of the magnetic phase transitions in the highly disordered cuprate LiCu O , a frustrated S=1/2 square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet. The system comprises two types of edge-sharing CuO planes in which magnetic Cu ions are randomly substituted by non-magnetic Li at concentrations of ~20% and ~40%, respectively. While the moderately diluted planes (20%) develop long-range antiferromagnetic order below Tc1 124 K, the more strongly diluted planes (40%) lie close to the classical percolation threshold (pc 0.41) and exhibit a second, poorly understood transition below Tc2 30 K. Our preliminary elastic neutron diffraction measurements on WISH (RB2520339) identify a magnetic propagation vector q = (1/2, 0, 1/2) below Tc1. Initial refinements point to an unusual magnetic state in which the two CuO planes order with mutually orthogonal spin orientations below Tc2, suggesting that Li-induced disorder locally relieves magnetic frustration. To rigorously test and refine this scenario, we request three additional days of beamtime on WISH to obtain a complete dataset from both single-crystal and powder diffraction. This will enable an unambiguous determination of the magnetic ground state and its relationship to disorder-driven frustration in this system.
