In quest of the ground state of a potential Kitaev triangular lattice ErCuSe2

Abstract: Rare-earth-based triangular systems in the Delafossite family with dominant Kitaev exchange are rare; CsCeSe2 and KCeSe2 are the only two known compounds. However, the superexchange angle is quite away from 90 degrees, indicating a reduction of Kitaev exchange and an enhancement of non-Kitaev terms. We have synthesized a new Delafossite system, ErCuSe2, in a single-crystalline form, with a superexchange angle of 91.13 degree, much smaller than those of the other two compounds. Magnetization and heat capacity measurements indicate a magnetic ordering at 0.65 K with strong easy plane anisotropy. Moreover, the lowest-lying crystal electric field (CEF) is about 35 K, as estimated from thermodynamic measurements. Thus, the spin configuration of the ordered state and also the CEF information will be necessary to establish ErCuSe2 as a Jeff = 1/2 system, with dominant Kitaev exchange.
