Possible phase coexistence driven by the nematic correlation in a frustrated zigzag chain compound YbCuS2
Abstract: Conventionally, the Heisenberg zig-zag chain (J1-J2 model) provides a dimer spin-singlet ground state with gapped excitations; however, including spin-orbit interaction stabilizes a more exotic phase, namely the nematic dimer-singlet phase with gapless excitations. Experimental observation of such a nematic dimer-singlet phase is scarce. YbCuS2 (which undergoes incommensurate ordering at 0.95 K) turns out to be a promising candidate to realize such a state, as proposed by Nuclear quadrupolar resonance (NQR). Moreover, strong quantum fluctuations are inferred from heat-capacity measurements. Thus, to elucidate the true nature of the ground state, muSR would be essential, especially for a state where possible phase separation may be expected, and the temperature evolution and longitudinal-field effect will help explore the nature of the individual phases.
