The Role of Surface Roughness on Membrane Leaflet Mobility in Supported Lipid Bilayers
Abstract: Interfacial membrane mimetics are a major theme within the neutron reflectometry group at ISIS. Within the group we offer a number of differing, biologically accurate, membrane models. Despite being the subject of several articles in the past the influence of the substrate on these biomimetics is often overlooked. However, we have noticed different leaflet flipping behaviour between Gram-nagtive membrane mimetics deposied on differentially cleaned silicon supports. We hypothesize that the differences are due to the level of surface influence on the bilayers being inversely correlated with the surface nano-roughness. Here we propoose to test this hypothesis and enable a better understanding of how to modulate substrate influence on supported lipid bilayers.
