Investigation of TiO?-based Photoanodes: Understanding the Effect of Metal Doping on the O-H vibrational Modes via Inelastic Neutron Scattering - MAPS
Abstract: This research investigates the enhancement of Titanium Dioxide (TiO )-based photoanodes for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting through metal doping with silver (Ag) and copper (Cu) nanoparticles. TiO is a promising material for PEC applications due to its stability, low cost, and nontoxicity. However, its large bandgap and high electron-hole recombination rates limit its performance under visible light. Metal doping has been shown to improve photocatalytic activity by creating oxygen vacancies and altering the electronic structure. The presence of hydroxyl ions (OH ) plays a critical role in charge trapping and radical generation during water splitting, yet the atomic-level mechanisms behind these improvements remain poorly understood. Conventional methods like FTIR and XPS offer limited insights into the dynamics of surface hydroxyl groups. To address this, Inelastic Neutron Scattering (INS) is proposed as a technique to probe O-H bonding, providing details characterization of both O-H stretching and bending vibrations. INS is highly sensitive to low-frequency vibrational modes, which are essential for understanding surface hydroxyl dynamics in PEC performance. This study will focus on four samples pristine TiO , Ag-doped TiO , Cu-doped TiO , and Ag/Cu co-doped TiO using INS measurements at the MAPS spectrometer to further explore these dynamics and their role in enhancing PEC efficiency.
