Investigating disorder in triangular lattice antiferromagnet TmZn2GaO5.

Abstract: TmZn2GaO5 is an interesting compound recently proposed to exhibit a quantum-disordered or multipolar ground state. In this system, the Tm3+ ions are arranged on a triangular lattice in the ab-plane, making it an ideal platform for studying frustrated magnetism. However, understanding the nature of the ground state requires careful investigation of possible site disorder between the Zn2+ and Ga3+ sites. The broad continuum-like features observed in inelastic neutron scattering (INS), often associated with exotic ground states in disordered triangular lattices, may also originate from chemical disorder due to partial occupancy of Zn and Ga at each other's sites. We therefore propose to investigate site mixing at the Zn and Ga sites in TmZn2GaO5 using powder neutron diffraction on GEM. The results will be crucial in determining whether the continuum-like features observed in INS measurements are intrinsic to a quantum-disordered ground state or arise from site disorder, as observed in earlier members of this series.
