Magnetic ground state and negative thermal expansion study of spin-5/2 Mn2+ antiferromagnet: Mn2P2O7

Abstract: The transition metal pyrophosphate series, A2P2O7 (where A is a 3d transition metal), presents a rich playground for studying low-dimensional magnetism and complex exchange interactions. Among these, Mn2P2O7 is particularly intriguing due to the classical spin state of S = 5/2 of the Mn2+ ions which is less explored. While bulk magnetization measurements provide a macroscopic view of long-range-ordering (LRO) magnetic transitions, however, they cannot uniquely determine the microscopic spin arrangement or the anisotropy of the exchange interactions. Thus, here our interest is to determine the magnetic structure of this compound using neutron powder diffraction measurements on GEM, which will allow us to know the magnetic propagation vector and orientation of Mn2+ magnetic moments.
