INS study of the hydrogen interaction on N and S-doped metal-free biochar catalysts for CO2 utilisation

Abstract: The transition to a carbon-balanced net-zero emission can be achieved by the utilization of carbon itself by a catalytic process which is potential to become a vital industry. Concurrently, carbon capture and utilization present a promising solution in addressing net-zero emission by catalytic utilization of CO2 into more valuable products such as fuels and chemicals. Precious metals such as Pt and Pd have been used in most of chemical processes despite the fact that these metals are extremely expensive, barely available, and unevenly distributed. Therefore, the development of alternatives is strongly recommended. Due to its potential and naturally abundance, biomass has been widely studied. Candlenut (Aleurites moluccana) shell is one of an agro-industrial wastes produced from the processing candlenut fruit. According to FAO statistics in 2020, the annual world production of candlenut shell, Indonesia reached up to 100,700 metric tons. This enormous amount of waste could become a high potential to utilize and would be very beneficial for candlenut farmers. Biochar from candlenut shell was modified via N and S-doping method as metal-free catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation reaction. To understand the hydrogen interaction on N and S-doped metal free biochar we proposed an INS study.
