Multiferroic interfaces in BiFeO3-PbTiO3/ferromagnet bilayers for efficient memory devices
Abstract: Ferroelectrics are promising candidates for energy-efficient electronic devices in future information technologies owing to their non-volatile and low-energy operation of spontaneous electric polarisation. xBiFeO -(1-x)PbTiO (BFPT) is a ferroelectric perovskite for all values of x, and antiferromagnetic at certain values of x. The material properties depend on the crystal symmetry, which in turn depends on the ratio of BiFeO to PbTiO .For x > 0.7, the crystal structure is rhombohedral (R), with the ferroelectric saturation polarisation (Ps) // [111], while for x < 0.7 it is tetragonal (T), with Ps // [001]. At room temperature, the R phase is G-type antiferromagnetic, while the T phase is paramagnetic. At x=0.7, BFPT exhibits a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) between T and R structures, accompanied by an enhancement in the ferroelectric properties. The MPB allows us to switch between antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic behaviour with applied stress or electric field. We wish to understand why the exchange bias changes as a function of composition. Previous VSM and PNR results indicate this is to do with diffusion in the layers and changes at the interface between the FM and BFPT.
