Investigating interplay of pressure and temperature on Prussian white phase transitions

Abstract: Prussian white, Na2Fe[Fe(CN)6] nH2O, is an interesting material both fundamentally and from an applied perspective. The cyanide-based double perovskite structure has a complex phase behaviour dictated by both temperature and the hydration state. We have begun to characterise Prussian white's pressure response through previous room temperature studies at PEARL and variable-pressure-temperature experiments at Diamond I15. From the so-far collected data we have started to construct a pressure-temperature phase diagram of Prussian white, but due to coexisting phases and lower symmetry the higher temperature regiments of this phase diagram is difficult to solve with X-ray data alone. By complementing with high temperature, variable pressure neutron diffraction, we have a better chance of constructing a detailed phase diagram. We will also be able to confirm the suspected pressure induced spin crossover transition we observed at previous measurements. In summary, there are many reasons why investigating the high-pressure behaviour of Prussian white is worthwhile. Our study will give fundamental insights into the structural behaviour and will be useful for future applications with the material.
