Fluid Frameworks: Porosity in the Liquid Phase
Abstract: Gas capture and storage are globally two of the most critical research and policy topics due to their significant energetic and environmental importance. Porous liquids have emerged over the last decade and have demonstrated, due to their porous nature, to be efficient gas-capturing materials in continuous flow processes. We are in the early stages of demonstrating a new type of porous liquid, not relying on the presence of a porogen to form a cavity as the known four types of porous liquids do, but rather in which the pores exist in a stable manner between the molecules of the pure liquid phase. 4-penoxyphenol is known to form H-bond-directed crystal structures with permanent pores in the crystal form. We aim to determine whether maintaining the material just above its melting point allows for sufficient hydrogen-bonded organisation in the liquid phase to retain aspects of the pore architecture present in the solid state. To do this, we propose to study the differences in porosity observed in 4-phenoxyphenol at three different temperatures; below, at and above the melting point. Neutron scattering allows these unique systems to be characterised in terms of structure and porosity in a detail far beyond what is currently available. This, along with results from small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements (available to us from December 2025/January2026) would provide conclusive evidence of their behaviour.
