Exploring the vestigial three-state Potts nematicity in detwinned alpha-RuCl3

Abstract: The honeycomb magnet alpha-RuCl3 is a proximate Kitaev quantum magnet hosting fractionalized spin excitations. Recent studies on FePSe3 revealed a vestigial three-state Potts nematic phase arising from the degeneracy of zigzag magnetic domains. Whether - alpha-RuCl3 exhibits a similar vestigial nematicity across TN remains unknown. We propose to map spin excitations under strains applied along two orthogonal high-symmetry directions. The two orthogonal strain directions will produce different detwinning effects, enabling us to reveal distinct patterns of C2-symmetric spin fluctuations slightly above TN if a three-state Potts nematic state exists. By comparing the results, we will distinguish intrinsic nematic correlations from domain-population effects and establish how spin excitations symmetry evolves across the magnetic transition in alpha-RuCl3.
