Magnetic Interactions and Spin Dynamics of Defective Hexagonal Boron Nitride (hBN) Studied by ?SR

Abstract: Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is a two-dimensional crystalline material composed of boron and nitrogen atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice structure. The hBN has garnered significant interest due to its similarities with graphene, as both possess honeycomb lattices in a two-dimensional structure with a mere 1.8% lattice mismatch, making it ideal for strain-free integration with graphene. Integrating magnetic hBN with graphene offers a promising route toward 2D spintronic heterostructures and new magnetic insulators. hBN is theoretically anticipated to demonstrate localized magnetism in the presence of defects. In this study, hBN was thermally treated at 650 to 950C to introduce structural defects such as adatoms or vacancies. Structural analysis (XRD, FTIR, Raman, HR-TEM) confirms the presence of B and N adatoms that modify the structure without altering the hexagonal phase. Complimenting that analysis, the XAS shows the enhancement of the phi * feature in hBN950 related to changes of electronic structure, evidencing increased defect concentration. Magnetic measurements reveal weak ferromagnetism at room temperature with a small coercive field (~120 Oe). Preliminary muSR results indicate the development of magnetic correlations below 300 K and possible spin fluctuations at low temperature, while LF and TF data suggest the presence of distinct muonium states.
