Investigating isotope effects in self-assembled micelle topologies of functionalised rylenes
Abstract: Here we investigate the isotope effect using SANS and SAXS in the self-assembly on water soluble perylene bisimide materials. The need for contrast in SANS is vital for the experiment commonly achieved with the use of deuterated solvents or materials, also can be used as an extremely powerful tool with contrast variation and matching experiments used to structurally map materials within multicomponent systems. We have preliminary data from a SAXS experiment showing that the scattering from our systems can be drastically different in D2O compared to H2O depending on the molecule. In this proposal we wish to use both SAXS and SANS to investigate the isotope effect on our perylene bisimide systems. We will look at a variety of deuterated and non-deuterated PBIs and solvents with contrast for the SANS to compare with the SAXS. From the SAXS we will the choose a system that has a change in structure in D2O vs H2O and one that has not, and conduct CM-SANS of these two systems. This information would be vital to ensure you are just matching out the structure, or whether the structure is being changed from the different isotopes therefore making the material not representative of the materials being studied.
