Light-dependent behaviour of membrane-bound chlorophyll
Abstract: The experiments outlined in this proposal build on a previous successful experiment studying the light-dependent behaviour of extracted chlorophyll deposited onto an electrode. In nature, chlorophyll is always present within a lipid bilayer membrane and so here we will scale up the complexity by inserting into a model supported lipid membrane via two different methods. By using deuterated and protonated lipids, we can monitor the structural movements of both protein and lipid matrix as a function of applied surface potential and illumination to better understand its role both in photosynthesis and in potential future sustainable energy applications.
