The Multi-Scale Structure of CO2 Ice at the Heart of Star Formation
Abstract: Interstellar ice is dominated by Amorphous Solid Water, with adsorbates mixed within its porous matrix. One of the notable adsorbates is CO2, which by itself has also been detected at the edge of star-forming clouds, potentially meaning that it is the first ice to form in interstellar space. Using D2O-CO2 as a model, our overall aim is to understand how the presence of adsorbates disrupts the structure and porosity of interstellar ice. The aim of this proposal is two-fold: (i) to understand how the structure and crystallinity of CO2 ice varies with deposition time and annealing temperature and (ii) to use these data to disentangle structural information in D2O-CO2 ices from our previous NIMROD experiments.
