Possible Kitaev spin liquid candidate in the spin-orbit entangled Jeff = 1/2 tetramer
Abstract: The search for Kitaev quantum spin liquids (QSLs), highly entangled magnetic states without long-range order, has expanded to diverse geometries hosting spin orbit entangled Jeff = 1/2 moments, although most systems still develop magnetic order due to competing non-Kitaev interactions. A key thermodynamic hallmark of a Kitaev QSL is the two-step entropy release, arising from Z2 flux excitations at low temperatures and itinerant Majorana fermions at higher temperatures. Motivated by these considerations, we have investigated a newly synthesized Co-based coupled-tetramer compound, which shows no long-range magnetic order down to 2 K but a broad susceptibility maximum near 10 K, indicative of short-range correlations. A crossover from S = 3/2 to Jeff = 1/2 behavior is revealed by two Curie Weiss regimes with negative Weiss temperature. Specific-heat data down to 54 mK display two broad maxima at TH = 4 K and TL = 80 mK (TL/TH = 0.02), consistent with the two-step entropy release characteristic of a Kitaev QSL. To unambiguously determine the microscopic nature of the ground state, we propose muon spin relaxation measurements, which can directly probe slow spin dynamics and persistent fluctuations in zero field.
