Investigating Transport Properties of Sparingly Solvating Electrolytes in Lithium Batteries
Abstract: This proposal presents an innovative investigation into transport properties of Li-ion and lithium polysulfide in sparingly solvating electrolytes (SSE), which are pivotal for the success of next-generation lithium metal batteries. We are investigating SSE formulations that integrate Lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) with diglyme (G2) as the solvent and diluents offering no or limited solvating power, namely 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl-2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether and Bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) ether. By tuning the component ratios, regions of high salt concentration form, which suppress lithium polysulfide migration and promote a stable solid-electrolyte interphase. Experiments will employ compact Swagelok cells under C/10 cycling to capture spatial and temporal ion transport, utilizing the IMAT CCD whitebeam system with high spatial resolution (~60 um). Tomography, performed at both top and bottom charge states, will enable visualization of inactive regions within the cathode, providing insight into sulfur utilization. This study aims to elucidate the impact of solvation structures on Li-ion and polysulfide transport, offering valuable guidance for the development and optimization of next-generation Li-metal batteries for superior cycling. The results are expected to significantly accelerate improvements in battery efficiency and overall energy sustainability.
