Investigation of the antimicrobial effects and mechanisms of the A-beta peptide on natural biomimetic membrane models using NR
Abstract: The A-beta peptides, traditionally regarded as purposeless byproducts generated through intramembrane cleavage under pathological conditions, have long been associated with Alzheimer's disease. However, growing evidence suggests that these peptides may instead represent an ancient and highly conserved effector component of the innate immune system, evolved to protect the brain against microbial invasion. According to the antimicrobial protection hypothesis, strongly supported by experimental results, A-beta aggregation could reflect not a random pathological process but a dysregulated innate immune response. In this project, we aim to investigate the antimicrobial properties and mechanisms of A-beta using Neutron Reflectometry on biomimetic membrane models derived from eukaryotic and prokaryotic cell extracts. This research seeks to advance our understanding of the molecular mechanisms linking antimicrobial activity and neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's disease.
