Quasi-Elastic Neutron Scattering to probe amine mobility in CO2 capture sorbents
Abstract: Amine-based porous materials are the leading technology for removing CO2 from the air (direct air capture; DAC). To designed optimised systems, we will explore the mobility of model grafted-aminosilane silicas to improve the fundamental understanding of the amine s interactions with each other, CO2, and the surface itself. Aminosilanes are readily grafted onto the interior walls of porous materials, with the free amines forming a possible range of species with CO2. This approach allows us to engineer specific amine sites, with controllable amine densities, to isolate and mimic the interactions in industrial aminopolymer DAC species. In this work we will perform QENS measurements on five systems at 303 K (DAC and Flue Gas CO2 capture temperatures), to explore the influence of amine density, and amine type. Specifically, QENS measurements at these temperatures will allow us to fit rotation models to EISF v Q data to explore the influence our experimental design parameters have on the reach of our systems. We will couple this with existing data correlating amine density and CO2 uptake performance, serving as a descriptor for improved computational understanding, and aiding the design of new DAC materials.
