Structure of Ethylene Glycol?Water Mixtures Near the Eutectic Composition (part 2)

Abstract: Mixtures of ethylene glycol (EG) and water are widely used as coolants and antifreezes, yet the molecular origins of their exceptional freezing-point depression remain unclear. Our recent neutron scattering study (RB2210282) provided the first detailed, composition-resolved view of these liquids at room temperature and revealed an unexpected structural crossover near XEG 0.46. At this composition, both EG and water form extended hydrogen-bonded networks, but the water network becomes string-like and partially disrupted rather than tetrahedral, suggesting a microscopic link to the mixture s eutectic behaviour. However, the previous dataset only covered four compositions and did not include the full eutectic range or temperature variation. This continuation aims to fill that critical gap by examining mixtures between XEG = 0.25 and 0.54, including the industrial 50:50 (v/v) blend, at both ambient and sub-zero temperatures. Using total neutron scattering with isotopic substitution and empirical potential structure refinement, we will determine how hydrogen-bond connectivity evolves across the eutectic region. These data will resolve whether the observed structural anomaly represents a distinct eutectic feature or a gradual transition, providing the essential molecular framework for future studies of EG water mixtures under confinement and in applied systems.
