Depth-Resolved Investigation of Magnetic Spin Reorientation in ?-Fe2O3 Thin Films Across the Morin Transition via Polarized Neutron Reflectivity
Abstract: Antiferromagnetic -Fe2O3 exhibits a temperature-driven spin reorientation known as the Morin transition, characterized by a switch of the N el vector from out-of-plane to in-plane alignment. While this transition is well understood in bulk, its behaviour in thin films where interfacial effects and structural distortions become prominent remains elusive. Our previous work demonstrated that film thickness significantly affects the Morin transition temperature and magnetic anisotropy, suggesting a non-uniform spin structure along the film depth. In this proposal, we aim to employ Polarized Neutron Reflectivity (PNR) to achieve angstrom-scale depth profiling of the net magnetic moment in -Fe2O3 thin films with varying thicknesses (23 nm, 75 nm). By performing measurements at 100 K, 200 K, and 300 K under a saturating magnetic field, we will resolve how the N el vector evolves from the substrate interface to the film surface. This study will offer unprecedented insights into depth-dependent spin reorientation phenomena, laying the groundwork for controlling interfacial spin structures in antiferromagnetic spintronic devices.
