Pressure and temperature driven structural studies of adsorbed water in MIL-53(Cr)

Abstract: Barocaloric materials, which undergo large temperature changes with hydrostatic pressure, offer the opportunity to replace current heating and cooling technologies that require the compression of hazardous gases. Such materials therefore promise to have a large impact on the energy industry, especially since barocaloric effects are found in a wide range of material families (ranging from plastic crystals to magnetic alloys). 2022 saw the first demonstration of barocaloric effects in MOFs, with MIL-53(Al) under CO2 sorption. To build on this research, in a recent DLS experiment we have demonstrated and explored giant barocaloric effects of the water-sorption driven breathing transition of the metal-organic framework (MOF) MIL-53(Cr), in an effort to rid the sorption driven systems of the need for gas compression (which barocalorics were aiming to replace in the first place). The observed transitional behaviour turned out to be more complex than suggested by previously published studies on this material, which we attribute to structural reordering of confined water under temperature and pressure changes. Better understanding these structural changes will be necessary to explain the nature of the pressure driven transition, and by extension the origins of the observed barocaloric effects.
