Quasi Elastic Neutron Scattering Investigations on Hybrid Gamma Irradiated Cellulose Membrane for Uremic Toxin Removal
Abstract: The development of advanced hemodialysis membranes remains essential for improving the clearance of small uremic toxins such as urea and creatinine. In this study, we investigate hybrid cellulose acetate (CA) membranes incorporating mesoporous silica (MS) and modified with poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate (PEGMEA) via gamma irradiation. This hybrid design combines the biocompatibility and semi-permeability of CA with the high surface area and adsorption capacity of MS, while PEGMEA grafting enhances hydrophilicity and antifouling properties. Building on our previous QENS experiments (RB2520316), which revealed distinct diffusion behaviors of water and urea in CA-PEGMEA and CA-PEGMEA/MS membranes, the present work focuses on extending the investigation to creatinine diffusion and the effect of gamma irradiation on membrane structure. Therefore, QENS measurements will be conducted at 37 C on irradiated and non-irradiated membranes containing water, urea, or creatinine to elucidate their molecular diffusion and structural dynamics. The results are expected to provide fundamental insights into the relationship between gamma irradiation, membrane microstructure, and toxin transport mechanisms, supporting the rational design of next-generation hemodialysis membranes.
